NYC_BloomingdalesNew York, New York (February 16, 2016) – For the 18th consecutive year, luxury department store Bloomingdale’s will donate to, and raise awareness for, Mentoring USA through the Fashionable Fundraiser Event from February 25th – 28th.  Mentoring USA is a nationwide nonprofit pairing at-risk youths with inspirational adult mentors who guide, develop, and boost the self-esteem of their mentee, creating healthy relationships and encouraging positive life choices.

Bloomingdale’s Fashionable Fundraiser Event underscores the company’s commitment to combating social issues and highlights its belief that all children deserve an equal chance at success. Through its partnership with Mentoring USA, the donation from Bloomingdale’s will go to supporting one-to-one site-based mentoring programs, enabling children and teenagers to achieve their potential.  Mentoring USA believes in the transformative impact positive role models have and works to bridge the achievement gap and combat school dropout rates through the support of trained adult mentors.

“Through partnerships between private companies and non-profit organizations, such as the one between Bloomingdale’s and Mentoring USA, we are working collaboratively to solve the major crises of our society,” stated Maria Cuomo-Cole, Mentoring USA’s chairman. “Bloomingdale’s was one our earliest supporters, after Mentoring USA was founded by my mother, Matilda Raffa Cuomo, over 20 years ago, and we are proud and honored that it has stood by its commitment ever since.”

Since 1998, Bloomingdale’s has donated an average of $100,000 per year to Mentoring USA.  In addition, Bloomingdale’s employees are encouraged to participate in Mentoring USA programs fostering positive relationships and nurturing the academic and emotional needs of children in their formative years. Jen Daft, Bloomingdale’s Vice President, Divisional Merchandise Manager – Ready to Wear, and Ayla Faitelson of P.S. 59 in New York City are an example of the program’s tremendous impact. Ms. Daft has been volunteering for Mentoring USA since 2007 and Ayla is the third child Jen has mentored. Ayla and Jen were matched together during the 2014 – 2015 school year when Ayla was in the 3rd grade.

“Giving back to the community through Mentoring USA has been such a rewarding experience,” said Ms. Daft. “I’m so proud to be able to work for a company that allows me to do meaningful work in and out of the office. And, you know, as much as I impart to my mentee, I learn so much in return too.”

For the past ten years, Bloomingdale’s has showcased its commitment to nurturing creativity in Mentoring USA’s program by inviting an elementary school class to the 59th Street flagship to paint and decorate the Lexington Avenue windows. This year’s display featured artwork created by a group of third graders from P.S. 59 which was displayed from January 13th – February 7th.
