“The delicate balance of mentoring someone is not creating them in your own image, but giving them the opportunity to create themselves.” – Steven Spielberg

Dear Mentors,School

School is in session and Mentoring USA is kicking off its 27th year of programs!

Hundreds of children and adolescents are participating in our programs in NYC and in 8 cities across the country.

Only a few hours a month can make a positive difference in a young person’s life. And being a Mentor can be just as beneficial to you. Mentors have expressed a strong sense of personal fulfillment, increased self-confidence, and a feeling of energy and renewal.

We appreciate the time, support and energy you will give your Mentee this year. Have fun creating a special friendship that will have a lasting impact on a child’s life.

Mentor Tip: Getting to Know Your Mentee

Try not to ask too many questions at once and be aware of how your Mentee is feeling. Watch how they respond and this will indicate to you if you are asking too much too soon.

Sometimes getting a conversation to flow can be all about timing or just finding the right topic. Don’t force it or expect instant success. Nobody gets it perfect all of the time. Make sure to ask your Mentee what they would like to do. They may have lots of ideas and it helps to establish your relationship by giving them some control.

Mentoring USA provides an activity at each session designed to strengthen the relationship and provide an opportunity for conversion. Don’t get too caught up in the details and don’t forget to have fun!
