May 22, 2013- Mentoring USA and Bloomingdale’s have concluded another successful year assisting youth in reaching their potential. This week, employee mentors from Bloomingdale’s Chevy Chase, MD celebrated the end of the school year with their mentees from Viers Mills Elementary School. The program in which Bloomingdale’s partners with Mentoring USA, a leading provider of site-based mentoring, ends on a high note with mentee participants successfully completing another year of school.
The program has paired sixteen students with mentors from Bloomingdale’s Chevy Chase store. The program, now in its third year, meets twice a month after school. Students are able to engage with their mentors who can draw upon Mentoring USA’s renowned curriculum that focuses on fostering an appreciation for diversity, building self-esteem and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Susan Cannaday, OVP and General Manager of Chevy Chase Bloomingdale’s said, “Bloomingdale’s has been a long standing partner of Mentoring USA and we here in the Chevy Chase store are proud to uphold the mission locally with our partners at Viers Mill Elementary. The support that Mentoring USA provides with programs such as ours helps create a positive environment for children in our community and helps us as an organization give back to our local areas in a multitude of ways.”
Stephen Powell, Mentoring USA Executive Director, said, “We are proud to be partners with Bloomingdale’s, which has been instrumental in providing mentors to countless underserved youth across the U.S. We are grateful for their support as true community champions and a fine example of corporate social engagement.”
“This program is successful because of [the Bloomingdale’s mentor] efforts. The mentors are a very bright spot in the child’s world,” Santa Scott, School Counselor and Mentoring USA Site Supervisor Viers Mill Elementary said.
Bloomingdale’s has partnered with Mentoring USA for over fifteen years. Programs using Bloomingdale’s mentors are currently in operation in New York, California and Maryland. Additionally, the store also holds an annual Fashionable Fundraiser in support of Mentoring USA, giving shoppers the opportunity to support Bloomingdale’s in their $75,000 pledge of support. In January, National Mentoring Month, Bloomingdale’s annually dedicates a window at their 59th Street flagship store in New York City to Mentoring USA.
