Mentoring USA Youth Mentees Achieve 99 Percent Grade Completion

July 2, 2014- Mentoring USA has concluded another successful school year with 99% of mentees moving on to the next grade level. This school year 10,000 persons were impacted by Mentoring USA’s direct services and technical assistance across the country. Parents and students were able to engage with their mentors who can draw upon Mentoring USA’s renowned curriculum that focuses on fostering an appreciation for diversity, building self-esteem, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and financial education and responsibility.

Stephen Powell, Mentoring USA Executive Director, said, “We are excited to have ninety-nine percent of our mentees move on to the next grade. This accomplishment, along with increased parental participation, and community partnerships, shows having a meaningful adult mentor and advocate can truly make a difference in the life of a young person.”

Mentoring USA is a leading national provider of one-to-one site based mentoring for youth. For the second consecutive year, Mentoring USA supported the NYC Office of the Mayor as the exclusive mentoring organization partner for an innovative wraparound mentoring pilot launched in partnership with the NYC Young Men’s Initiative (YMI), Bloomberg Philanthropies, and the Open Society Foundation- Campaign for Black Male Achievement (CBMA). In addition, Mentoring USA partnered with the White House in support of President Obama’s “My Brothers Keepers” initiative, which addresses the persistent opportunity gaps faced by boys and young men of color to ensure that all young people can reach their full potential. Mentoring USA was also chosen by the Rome, NY school district to help launch a pilot mentoring program to combat bullying culture within the school system.

In addition to providing support to ensure that ninety-nine percent of Mentoring USA’s mentees all advanced to the next grade level, Mentoring USA is proud to celebrate its “Success by the Numbers”:

  • Fifty-one percent (51%) of the youth who received a minimum of 5 months of mentoring program services increased their grade point average since the last school year
  • Seventy-five (75%) of the youth who received a minimum of 5 months of mentoring program services showed an improvement in school attendance since the last school year
  • 11 college bound mentees
  • 10,000 persons received specialized technical assistance and training
  • 6 new corporate partnerships
  • 4 new faith-based partnerships
  • 11% decrease in school suspensions in NYC
  • 75% increase in social media interaction
  • 15 keynote presentations; 5 commencement addresses
  • 80% of parents who received financial education training committed to setting up 529 college savings plans

Jahari, a mentee at the Eagle Academy for Young Men-Metropolitan Baptist Newark mentoring program site said, “I like my mentor because he is the one that consistently counts me in when others sometimes count me out.”

Mentoring USA currently serves the following cities with mentoring programs and technical assistance and support: New York City; Rome, NY; Los Angeles CA; Costa Mesa CA; Houston, TX; Oakland, CA; Louisville KY; Chicago, IL; Silver Spring MD; Newark NJ; Philadelphia, PA; Las Vegas NV. Mentoring USA also helps underserved children internationally through its affiliates Mentoring Italia and Mentoring Espana with mentoring programs in Europe, including in Italy, Spain, Morocco, Belgium and Latvia; and has provided technical assistance to government and educational institutions in Asia.
