Partner Site Spotlight: New Alternatives for Children (NAC)
This week’s featured program site is New Alternatives for Children (NAC), whose mission is to provide innovative, high-quality services in support of birth, foster, and adoptive families caring primarily for children with severe physical, emotional, and behavioral challenges and developmental disabilities. NAC mainly supports children whose birth families live in poverty; by supporting families, NAC prevents lengthy stays in foster care, hospitals, or other institutions.
Each week, Mentoring USA is highlighting one initiative that mentors and mentees take part in to build strong, supportive relationships. This week’s subject is Financial Education.
At Mentoring USA, we help prepare young people for future success. Our Financial Education Initiative helps young people learn more about financial basics and navigate the fundamentals of personal finance, and encourages personal financial responsibility.
The program teaches children the fundamentals of how to manage, budget, save, spend, and invest money. Through support from the NASDAQ OMX Educational Foundation, we are able to provide financial education and mentoring for youth of all ages.
Mentoring USA also offers an annual Financial Education mini-conference that targets mentors, mentees, and the mentee’s parent/guardian(s). In the spring of 2014, Mentoring USA held a Financial Education Forum for mentees and their family in Newark NJ, offering strategies on 1) making effective financial decisions; 2) improving money management skills; and 3) increasing knowledge about financial systems.
