WASHINGTON, DC – Thursday, January 12th, eight local leaders who are following in the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. will be honored at the White House as Champions of Change. These men and women, who include business and non-profit leaders and community volunteers, have each taken great strides to improve the lives of others through volunteerism and in providing economic opportunity to others in their community
Mentoring has the power to make a significant difference in young person’s life. Mentors act as positive adult role models, nurture our youth through the more challenging times, and help them navigate towards a successful adult life.
In 2009, Determined to Educate piloted a program called “The Journal Project-Our Stories”—matching teens from Christopher Columbus High School in the Bronx with senior citizens at the Pelham Parkway Nursing Home in the Bronx.
On June 16, 2011 Mentoring USA Executive Director, Stephen Powell, accepted an invitation from the Korean Minister of Health and Welfare, Chin Hoo-see, to join domestic and international experts on volunteerism and philanthropy at the inaugural International Conference on Sharing.

 

USTA Serves, the National Charitable Foundation of the United States Tennis Association, announced that it has awarded 33 year-end grants totaling $420,650. Among the organizations recognized with grants were: Project Lovematch in Saddle River, NJ ($3,000 grant); Say Yes to Education in Syracuse, N.Y ($10,000 grant); HERO in Purchase, N.Y. ($18,630 grant); the New York Junior Tennis League in Queens, NY ($15,000 grant), and three in New York, NY - Abundant Waters ($5,000 grant), Harlem Junior Tennis and Education Program ($25,000 grant), and Mentoring USA ($15,000 grant).

 

Bloomingdale’s Vice President of Finance Richard Pittelli received the National Mentoring Summit Mentor of the Year award January 25, 2011, in the Library of Congress.
Through participation in this career oriented program, Deneen Beatrice Borner, a spirited 15 year-old freshman from Harlan Community Academy High School has been selected to go to Washington DC to represent Polished Pebbles. Deneen will introduce First Lady Michelle Obama at the 2011 National Mentoring Summit held at the Library of Congress on January 25, 2011.
