Numerous studies provide powerful evidence that caring adults can positively influence youth. As role models, mentors demonstrate the tangible rewards of completing an education and the responsibility and benefits of being a productive member of society. The individual attention provided by a mentor can introduce a child to new interests, talents and opportunities; improve school performance; and reduce the rate of school drop-out, substance abuse and teenage pregnancy.
Most importantly, a mentor provides reliability in a child's life. A mentor is a positive, adult role model who can help build and maintain a consistent and trusting relationship with a child. This invaluable relationship is something a child will carry with him or her for the rest of his or her life.
Our mentors volunteer at sites that fall under three different categories:
Mentoring USA currently serves communities in New York City, Los Angeles, CA; Chicago, IL; Houston, TX; Las Vegas, NV; Newark, NJ; , Denver, CO; Philadelphia, PA; Austin, TX; and Louisville, KY; and the Washington DC Capitial Area.
In Newark, New Jersey, Mentoring USA works with Mayor Cory Booker’s senior staff that mentors children at the Eighteenth Avenue School. New programs have also been launched in Houston, Texas through the Harris County Department of Education; in Las Vegas through a technical assistance partnership with Susan Taylor’s National CARES Mentoring Movement; in Los Angeles through LA’s BEST After School Program; with Dr. Mehmet Oz’s HealthCorps and with Bloomingdale’s in Manhattan.
