A new partnership was formed this year between the Archdiocese of New York and Mentoring USA. The Archdiocese has a tradition of providing educational opportunities in the communities in which they serve. Mentoring USA is joining with them in their mission by providing trained adult Mentors to support their students in developing better self-esteem, creating healthy relationships, and making positive life choices. The two program sites are in Harlem and kicked off this past fall.
Principal Frances at the St Charles Borromeo in West Harlem has supported bringing mentoring to the middle school students. Every other Friday night a group of dedicated Mentors and Mentees are led by their site supervisor, Mrs. Rodrigo. The fun-filled activities have focused on goal setting, healthy choices and relationship building.
In East Harlem, Principal Mueller has been promoting mentoring at St. Ann. Mrs. Elvy, the site supervisor, leads the Mentors and Mentees ever other Saturday morning with activities that focus on community service and good citizenship.
Both pilot programs have been a great success and Mentoring USA looks forward to growing these programs and continuing partnering with the Archdiocese.
